Nazar Boncuğu

The etymology of the word nazar comes from Arabic, meaning “sight”, “surveillance”, and “attention”, referring to the eye-shaped amulet that is believed to protect against the evil eye. The concept of the evil eye has a history in Mesopotamia, dating back at least 3,300 B.C.E.

Black and brown communities in the UK face constant surveillance—whether through policing or media scrutiny—creating a duality of being at home yet feeling like outcasts. This piece contrasts CCTV’s supposed protection with the Nazar boncuğu (Turkish eye), a symbol of protection and positivity. The colour blue connects to the Mediterranean, a dangerous passage for refugees, and the universal symbolism of the evil eye across cultures, inviting reflection on unity and resilience amidst division and hostility.
